Australia’s National Recycling Week 2022 ♻️
National Recycling Week 2022 ♻️: What better way to educate people about the importance of recycling than by holding a week-long event, right? In this blog, we talk about everything you should know about Australia’s National Recycling Week. We will mainly cover this year’s theme, share a bit of history about National Recycling Week and give tips on how you can recycle better.
Once upon a time, Americans who were, and I know still are, environmentally aware believed that recycling was created in the 1970s when demands to become more conscious of the environment came to fruition. This environmental movement produced the very first Earth Day and the birth of the Environmental Protection Agency.
‘Ban The Can’ was believed to be the first large-scale recycling campaign in the United States, which saw the collection of more than 9 tonnes of metal cans from Oahu, Hawaii’s streets thanks to the efforts of military and citizen volunteers.
However, mass recycling campaigns date back even further to as early as the Great Depression, wherein people had the need to reuse because of the way of life back then.
During the Great Depression, there was still a need to reuse. Manufacturers promoted their products based on their dual-purpose capabilities. Families made garments out of flour sacks and used biscuit canisters as lunch boxes. – National Today
Disregarding the argument on when recycling movements started, they were the catalysts to today’s efforts. - Promoting kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives
- Giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at home, work and school
National Recycling Week 2022 theme
What is the theme for this year’s National Recycling Week 2022?
This year, the theme emphasises that Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted.
As we have mentioned numerous times in our blogs, recycling alone won’t solve our waste problem. Many factors come in when it comes to building a more sustainable environment. Our everyday items, for example, go through a lot.
First comes the design and production stage. Once that is done, they are now ready to be transported, therefore exhausting fuel. Now comes the processing and labour stage before making their way into the market. After the consumer buys and uses said item, either disposal or recovery/recycling awaits it.
To create a more circular economy (i.e., a sustainable environment), we need to consider the following:
- not accepting use and disposal – finding the reusable alternative or breathing second life into resources,
- reduce buying newly produced resources,
- avoiding single-use items at all costs, and
- contributing to strengthening our recycled item market.
Why we need this annual campaign
Simply put, we need this campaign because people still have a lot of recycling misconceptions and confusion.
Australia’s annual National Recycling Week aims to help people recycle correctly. Of course, if people recycle correctly, then it becomes more sustainable.
Additionally, National Recycling Week, especially this 2022, highlights the importance of closing the loop (i.e., circular economy) by buying items made from recycled materials. This, as a result, births a more sustainable future.
How you can help
This National Recycling Week 2022 gifted us with some useful teachings on what to correctly do with your waste. Now, it’s time for you to apply them.
There are a number of ways you, as a concerned citizen, can do your part in creating a more sustainable future. Below are a few examples:
- Learn how to recycle effectively. Don’t recycle just to recycle! You have to recycle correctly and effectively. Sort out and label items you have at home and send them to the correct bin.
- Reuse what you can. Reduce buying single-use, non-recyclable items. For example, instead of getting a plastic bag when you go shopping, opt to use your own reusable bag.
- Impart your knowledge to others. Don’t you find joy in recycling and helping create a better environment? If so, then you should teach it to other people!
