Everything you need to know about salon waste disposal

So, how can you properly dispose of salon waste? What do we need to know more about it? Those are the questions we will be focusing on this blog for today. Before the disposal of waste in a beauty salon, the types of waste generated must be known first to truly dispose of it properly.

Generally, there are a number of types of waste in a salon. In the following section, we will discuss them.

Types of salon waste

Not everybody knows the appropriate bins to use for a certain type of waste. Knowing is very important because it is a key factor in the maintenance of your beauty salon.

Clinical and sharps waste

For this section, we will discuss two different wastes. The first type of salon waste which needs proper disposal is what we call clinical waste. Clinical wastes consist of items such as wax strips, pads, cotton wool buds, and every other item used for certain treatments.

We can categorise clinical waste into two: infectious or non-infectious.

As for sharps, it is anything that can pierce the skin. It can contain different concoctions, depending on the use. Typically, there are three types of sharps waste found in a salon.

First, the sharps with no medical or chemical contamination: this includes blades and needles used for acupuncture and tattoos. Second, the sharps with medical or chemical contaminations, regardless of amount: this includes anesthetic needles and micro-pigmentation pens. And, lastly, the hazardous sharps imbued with cytotoxic products. They are used for treatments like botox, hormones, and certain steroids.

Remember to keep them separate in individual bins. Furthermore, do not throw the needles (sharps) with any of the soft clinical waste. Doing so will risk puncturing the bag.

Now, on to the next two types of salon waste that needs proper disposal.

General and recyclable waste

Like in any other industries, you will always find general and recyclable waste in any beauty salons.

General waste typically means any non-recyclable waste that either goes to landfill or incineration plants, depending on the conditions. Recyclable, obviously, means any materials that can be repurposed or reused for the same purpose, going through a number of processes.

This can include the paper used to list down the clients, the cardboard from the packages they received containing their beauty products, tissues used for cleaning, the clients’ cut hair, and many others.

These are the four main salon waste you need to remember to do an efficient job in their disposal.
