How To Recycle More ♻️: In this blog, we will talk about something that can help you help the environment: increasing your recycling knowledge and rate at the same time!

Unequipped with the proper knowledge to recycle can lead to plenty of disastrous occurrences – sort of like a butterfly effect wherein one minute mistake can risk creating harmful incidences. Sending the wrong recyclable (more so sending non-recyclable) materials, for example, can contaminate and ruin a whole batch of recyclables.

Therefore, you should educate yourself firsthand on the dos and don’ts of recycling. Doing so should not have to be too extensive. For starters, you can research whether or not you can recycle particular items. A little bit of research, after all, will go a long way!

In addition, you can even kick it up a notch, albeit in a “slowly but surely” fashion, and increase your recycling. Learning how to recycle more not just benefits you, but it also benefits others and the environment as a whole.

Learning how you can recycle more

It really isn’t surprising in the slightest that plenty of people don’t know a whole lot about recycling. It can become quite confusing, trust me. Learning the composition of a particular item and checking each composition if you can recycle them may sound easy at first. However, learning that some items cannot be recycled which usually can be because it is composed of many materials in which some are non-recyclable might deter you from recycling the right altogether. This makes the process of separating recyclables from non-recyclable items quite difficult.

The bottom-line: you just got to control what you can control (i.e., recycle what you really can). Recycle what you can so that you divert a significant amount of waste which, unfortunately, usually end up in landfills.

With that said, there is room for improvement. You can and will recycle more by following some of our tips, which we state below.

Bag some knowledge

Seriously, you should supply yourself with ample knowledge on recycling. Just as you cannot bring a sword to a gunfight in real life, you also cannot recycle if you do not have even any kind of knowledge or information about it. Doubling down on the prior statement, we strongly discourage you to recycle without knowing anything about recycling.

We have already mentioned above that this is counterproductive and will even cause irreversible damages to batches of recyclables. Instead, try to educate yourself first and everything will follow. You will recycle more before you know it.

In addition, try to learn what your recyclables become after you recycle them. According to a paper in the Journal of Marketing, consumers tend to recycle more when they think about how their recyclables transform into a useful product.

Six studies in total were made that determined the outcome of the research. This involved disposing paper, viewing different advertisements of products, educating the consumers that recycling gives the recyclable a new life and more.

“This research has important implications for companies and organizations seeking to increase recycling rates. These studies provide compelling evidence that when consumers consider that recyclables are transformed into something new, they recycle more,” said Winterich. “Increasing transformation salience among consumers should be a priority for any organization seeking to increase collection rates. Increased recycling offers not only societal and environmental benefits, but also provides the source materials companies need for sustainable production of goods in a circular economy.”

How to recycle more: encourage others

Now that you’ve understood recycling a bit more than before, try to share your knowledge with others.

Increasing your recycling also means encouraging others to do the same.

You do not have to immediately start sharing it with others. Share it with someone you are comfortable talking to first such as your family and friends. Then when you become more accustomed to sharing your recycling experiences, you can try it with others.

Here, we have some tips you can do to encourage others to recycle.

  • Teach what you have learned. This tip is especially effective on children. The environment will benefit in the future if we teach the kids to recycle at an early age. Encourage them to make recycling a habit – they will recycle effectively for the rest of their lives. By teaching children, they will also encourage their parents to recycle more. You know kids, right?
  • Create a club dedicated on recycling. You are not alone when it comes to wanting to recycle more. Quite a lot do but do not really have enough knowledge about it.
  • Write about it. If you do not feel comfortable talking to others, you can write about your recycling knowledge and experience, instead. The best platform nowadays in spreading news is by using social media. Post and/or tweet! If you have a fairly large following, they will learn how to recycle more from you. If you prefer the older way of sharing news, then you can submit an article about recycling to your local newspaper.
